Before Triomphe, Céline had Macadam.

01 · The chain
Céline saw a chain, not a logo.
Paris, 1972. Céline Vipiana's car breaks down near the Arc de Triomphe. She looks at the chain that circles the monument — linked, mirrored C-shapes — and takes it home. Céline dates its historic monogram to that year.
On coated canvas the motif became what the vintage trade now calls Macadam: brown ground, tan leather, gold-tone fittings. The house never printed 'Macadam' on a label. Dealers did.
For thirty years it was Céline's quiet answer to Vuitton's Monogram — until Hedi Slimane brought it back in 2018 as Triomphe Canvas.

05 · The stamp
MC97/2 is a date, not a Céline model.
Inside ours: a leather tab stamped MC97/2 / MADE IN ITALY. Market records line MC96 up with 1996, MC97 with 1997, MC98 with 1998 — so '97' reads as c. 1997, the year Michael Kors arrived at Céline.
The same stamp appears on totes, Bostons and clutches alike. It is a production mark, not a reference number. And the final '/2'? Dealers read it as February or December — they cannot both be right, so we leave it undecoded.
What you can read: the full-length leather bands that carry the load from base to shoulder. On this tote, the straps do the structure.
